A powerful merchant class, expanding overseas trade, and stable political institutions created conditions favourable to innovation. The Agricultural Revolution increased food production and released labour from the land. Capital accumulated through colonial trade, including the slave trade, provided investment funds. A mobile workforce, displaced by enclosure and population growth, supplied cheap labour for factories and mines.

Social Impact

Working conditions: Factory employment involved 12-16 hour days, low wages, dangerous machinery, and child labour as young as five. Significance: provoked humanitarian concern and legislative intervention.
1833 — Factory Act: Prohibited employment of children under nine in textile mills. Significance: first effective state regulation of working conditions.
1842 — Mines Act: Prohibited women and children working underground. Significance: followed the shocking revelations of the Children’s Employment Commission.

Intuition

For centuries, agricultural improvements, trade profits, and population growth had been building water pressure behind a wall of tradition and manual labour. When the first machines cracked that wall, the flood of change was unstoppable. Each invention pulled the next — steam engines needed iron, iron needed coal, coal needed deeper mines, deeper mines needed better pumps. The factory system was not just a new way to work; it was a new way of living, where time itself was regimented by the clock rather than the seasons. The social upheaval that followed was the price of progress, paid by those who had no voice in demanding it.
Common Pitfalls

- Assuming benefits were immediate and universal. Improvements were slow, uneven, and concentrated among specific groups.
